The Sapporo to Otaru Self-Drive, Hour by Hour

The map above traces my favorite easy drive in Hokkaido: Sapporo to Otaru and back in a single day. It is short enough that nothing feels rushed, and the scenery does most of the work. Here is how the day usually flows when I do it with visitors.

Leave Sapporo in the morning, after rush hour if you can. Once you clear the western suburbs, follow Route 5 toward the coast. This is the stretch worth slowing down for: the road runs close to the water for much of the way, with the sea on one side and hills on the other. There are places to pull over when the light is good, and in winter the same view turns into steel-grey waves and snow, which has its own drama.

Aim to reach Otaru before midday. Park once, near the canal, and do the rest on foot; the center is compact and walking beats moving the car between sights. Walk the canal district, then take your time along Sakaimachi Street with its glass workshops and the music box museum. Otaru is a port town with a serious sushi reputation, so make lunch the centerpiece of the stop. In the afternoon, if the weather is clear, drive or take the ropeway up Mount Tengu for a wide view over the city and the bay. From there it is a relaxed hour or so back to Sapporo, and you can be at dinner by evening. If you would rather not drive at all, the same day works by train as a day trip.

Before you go, sort out the practical side: documents, winter tires, tolls, and parking are all covered in our driving in Hokkaido guide.

More Itineraries Coming

This page will grow as we map more of our favorite routes. Until then, the Hokkaido autumn road trip covers a multi-day foliage circuit with drive times, and the Sapporo to Otaru day trip guide has the train version of the route above, timed stop by stop.
