Otaru at a Glance

Otaru is a small harbor city northwest of Sapporo, and the easiest worthwhile day trip from the capital. Rapid trains on the JR Hakodate Line take about 35 to 45 minutes and cost around ¥1,200 one way, with the last stretch running right along the sea. The city grew rich a century ago on shipping and herring, and it kept the evidence: stone warehouses, old bank buildings, and the gas-lit canal that has become its postcard image.

Most visitors walk the canal district first, then drift down Sakaimachi Street for the glass workshops and the music box museum. Otaru glassmaking started with fishing floats and oil lamps and never stopped; today you can watch artisans work or blow a piece yourself. The food argument for coming is sushi. Otaru is a port town with a serious seafood reputation, and lunch here is half the reason locals make the trip. If you have the energy afterward, the Mount Tengu ropeway climbs to a wide view over the city and the bay, which is at its best around sunset. When to Visit

Otaru works in every season, but February is special: the Snow Light Path festival lines the canal and old rail bed with candles and snow lanterns.
